Sabum Eric Madis
Eric Madis began martial arts study in 1963 while growing up in rural Colorado. His formal instruction began in the summers of 1964 and 1965, learning Goju-ryu karate under Frank Goody Sensei. He later trained in judo at Northglenn Judo Club, military police jujutsu/self-defense at the University of Illinois and aikido under Gakku Homma Sensei. His training in tangsoodo began in 1983 under Kwanjang Jung Kil Kim and then under Kwanjang Jae Joon Kim, from whom he earned 2nd dan (MDK Dan #15710). He is currently 5th dan in tangsoodo, awarded in 2012 by Kwanjang Dennis McHenry & J.R. West of the United States Korean Martial Arts Federation. Over the decades he also trained in tangsoodo with Masters Jung Lee, Mike Shintaku, Eric Kim, Dennis McHenry and Robert Davis, aikido with Bruce Bookman Sensei and taekwondo with Master Nhumey Tropp. Mr. Madis has a B.A. in physiological psychology from the University of Illinois (1975), is a published martial arts historian and was awarded Martial Arts Writer of the Year by the International Ryukyu Karate Research Society in 2014.
